They were one of the first cultures to create a calendar that is 365 days long. A strong tradition of mathematical prowess was essential to development of the Mayan Calendar. The Maya also had a 104-year almanac based on the planet Venus and a 260 day calendar based on the apparent movement of the sun. The Maya gathered data about the movements of the stars, the moon, and the sun by naked-eye observation using stone monuments, stelae, buildings, and probably temporarily placed objects to help with precise alignments when recording.
